Açores: 12 million for climate change will help tourism

The European Commission will allocate 11,9 million euros to a project in the Azores that aims to help the Regional Environment Directorate to implement an existing climate change adaptation program on the islands, was this Wednesday announced.

This support will also help the tourism sector as the area of ​​the environment is a key factor for the sustainability of tourism in the region.

In addition to the project to adapt to climate change in the Azores, actions ranging from nature conservation to plastic waste management will be financed.

– “The project will address specific climate transition vulnerabilities that affect the region, with a focus on the sectors most at risk and using ecosystem-based approaches where relevant ”, says the community executive.

Emphasizing that climate change is a major problem in the nine islands of the Azores, the measures envisaged by this project include helping to transition to carbon neutral mobility, but also to draw society's attention to the great challenges created by climate change, contributing to greater climate governance and action by individuals and organizations ”.

The Regional Environment Directorate will also promote adaptation and mitigation measures in other policy areas, like energy, forestry and tourism, to increase climate resilience, that will last until 2030, read in a note published by the community executive.

The financing of the Azorean project is part of a broader strategy released by the European Commission, which provides funds for a total of 121 million to similar projects in Belgium, Alemanha, Irlanda, França, Hungria, Itália, Latvia, Holanda, Poland and Slovakia, além de Portugal.
