AHP: almost half of hotels in Portugal say to close by the end of the year

A Associação da Hotelaria de Portugal (AHP) said this Wednesday that 45% of hotel units in the country estimate to close their doors by the end of the year. Destes, 93% are already closed.

The information was advanced by Cristina Siza Vieira, executive president of AHP at an online press conference, citing the results of yet another survey carried out by the Association on ‘Closures in Hospitality 2020/2021’, with more worrying situations in Madeira and the Algarve, while the North of Portugal, with the exception of the city of Porto, the percentage is much lower.

Of those expected to close by the end of the year, the Algarve region stands out, com 65% of establishments, and of those 70% were already closed in November, following Madeira with 57% of respondents to reveal that they must be closed. In this region, all hotel units were already closed in November.

The scenario is not better in relation to the main hotel groups. According to the survey carried out by AHP, em Novembro, 56% admitted to closing their establishments by the end of 2020. Aqui, things get more complicated in the Algarve (78%) e em Lisboa (62%).

If in April 88% said it would be closed for only two months, em Maio 94% of respondents advanced the forecast to be open in December without decreasing the supply of available accommodation, while in September already 30% of establishments were closed, ou seja, segundo Cristina Siza Vieira, “Summer demand has not eased”.

As for establishments that remain open, a reduction of 72% the offer of accommodation units, ou seja, will not be operating at full capacity.

When asked if they are considering adopting intermittent use of their establishment (open, por exemplo, on weekends or for events), 40% replied to be willing to open on time.
