Tourist travel by residents decreased by almost 60% national territory and there were practically no (-98,5%) going abroad in the second quarter of this year, according to data released by INE this Monday.
In the 2nd quarter of 2020, os residentes em Portugal realizaram 2 million trips, which corresponded to a decrease of 64,9%. The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the declaration of the state of emergency in April and the state of calamity in May that imposed containment measures contributed to the observed decrease.
Despite this reduction, there was a very significant increase in the number of nights spent outside the usual environment by tourists, especially in April and May: 8 e 5,41 noites, respectivamente.
In the period analyzed by INE, 99,4% of journeys corresponded to trips on national territory, decreasing 59,1% compared to same period of the previous year. Tourist trips to foreign destinations were practically nil (0,6% do total), totalizando 12,4 mil (-98,5%).
O lazer, recreation or vacation was the main motivation for traveling in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (1,1 million trips, -61,1%), having increased its representativeness (53,8% do total, face a 48,6% homologous trimester), while the reason visiting family or friends corresponded to 686,6 1000 trips (34,9% do total, -2,8 p.p.), corresponding to a decrease of 67,5%.
Hotels and similar ones concentrated 10,8% of overnight stays resulting from tourist trips in the 2nd quarter, losing weight in total (-20,7 p.p.). No entanto, free private accommodation remained the main accommodation option (84,2% das dormidas), being the only type of accommodation to reinforce its representativeness.
