AHP: 25% of hotels were closed in September

Summer was an oxygen balloon, but after summer a bucket of cold water fell. Whoever said it was the CEO of the Portuguese Hospitality Association, when presenting the results of the survey “Impact of covid-19 on Hospitality - 4th phase - Summer Balance / Autumn Outlook ”, done to your associates, entre os dias 21 de Setembro e 15 de Outubro.

Cristina Siza Vieira also said that according to the data collected by the association in June, 52% of hotels were closed, mas, with the reopening of airspace, the value went to 30% em Julho, 28% em Agosto e 25% em Setembro.

Since September it has always been falling and the perspective is that the percentage of closed hotels will rise, added the executive president, highlighting that the hotels whose operation depends a lot on the organization of events, ou sejam, mostly city hotels, should not open doors again until the end of the year. Still within this theme, Cristina Siza Vieira highlighted that most members do not consider the final closure of their hotel companies.

Highlighting that the hotel industry in Portugal is not a small business and has been in a positive situation of financial autonomy with the tourism boom in recent years, AHP CEO explains that the big problem is related to the maintenance of workers.

Reason, according to that person, because most of the hotel businessmen said that government support measures are still needed, particularly with regard to maintaining employment.

AHP expects the hospitality to close the year with a loss of 70% de dormidas. Which means less 40,6 milhões de dormidas.

Still based on the responses to the survey, AHP considers that the majority of respondents believe that only in the second semester of 2023 is that tourism will resume operations, at the level of 2019, but there is a minimum (3,6%) who believes that this will only happen in 2024.
