Portugal: mais de 24 million guests in 2017

Total data from the National Statistics Institute INE-related to tourism in 2017 reveal that the tourist accommodation in Portugal (hotelaria, rural tourism / housing and local accommodation) hosted 24,1 milhões de hóspedes, com um crescimento de 2,9% face a 2016, e 65,8 milhões de dormidas (+10,8%).

The domestic market generated 18,8 milhões de dormidas, correspondendo a 28,5% do total. Foreign markets showed a higher growth and reached 47,1 milhões de dormidas.

The main source market was the United Kingdom (20,9% of the total number of nights spent by non-residents), registando um crescimento de 2,8%. The German market (13,8% do total) grew 11,3%, while the French and Spanish markets (both with a share of 9,9%) cresceram 5,2% e 7%, respectivamente.

For regions, overnights were largely positive, highlighting the growth seen in the Azores (+20,6%) e Centro (+19,9%). The Algarve has remained as the main destination, com 30,7% of total overnight stays, followed by the Lisbon region 25,4%. Overnight stays grew inside 17,6% (face a 9,6% no coast). Por outro lado, the months that have registered higher growth of overnight stays were in April (+28,6%), Janeiro (+15,3%), Dezembro (+13,6%) e Novembro (+11,9%), months out of high season, which highlights the expansion of tourism throughout the year.
